We Ran for Refugees!

by Adam Delezenne

Our small team ran 92 miles in the Detroit Marathon and raised just over $100 per mile! We were quite a crew, some of us were seasoned runners, and for some (like me!), this was our first time doing an organized run. We all had a great time!

This was a fantastic experience for me, not just because it was the Detroit Marathon but also because I was part of a team running to support an important cause. Together, we raised an incredible $9,345 for SWIRC’s new Safe Harbor Housing program.

Safe Harbor Housing will be a new housing option for asylum seekers who need a safe, stable place to restart their lives in the United States. Right now, a new asylum seeker needs to wait at least a year to work and cannot receive public housing support. In that in-between time, staying on a friend’s couch is often the best option.

SWIRC is renovating a large home in Southwest Detroit, purchased from the Detroit Land Bank, to become a safe, stable home for asylum seekers who need a place of refuge.

The money we raised is phenomenal! We still have a ways to go to make our goal of $675 thousand. Your gifts towards this goal will help transform a long-neglected property into a beautiful community resource and a source of hope for many asylum-seeking families.

You can still give to this project; make a donation now to deepen the impact of our team of runners.

We need our whole community to come together to make this project a success!

The Southwest Detroit Immigrant and Refugee Center provides free and low-cost legal services to those who need them most in the Detroit area, with a focus on recent immigrants and refugees.

We were founded in 2014 by Kevin Piecuch, our Executive Director, and principal attorney, to help meet the great need for quality legal services in underserved communities. We believe that everyone deserves justice regardless of their country of origin, the color of their skin, or their ability to afford an attorney.
