Our legal clinics can help so many people because of our exceptional team of dedicated volunteers. We welcome anyone willing to give of their time to help recent immigrants!
Our volunteer needs are always changing. If you are interested in any of the below roles, please fill out the form below and we will get back to you about our current needs. Many of the below roles require a long-term commitment of 6 months or more, while others are short-term.
Volunteer Roles
You don’t need to be an attorney to help. Volunteers assist in essential roles:
- Translators translate for Spanish, French, Arabic, Pashto and Dari speaking clients and mostly English speaking staff & volunteers.
- Researchers assist legal consultants by finding answers to a specific policy or process question, finding forms online, and helping with data entry. Researchers are asked to bring their own computer. They should be comfortable using an internet search engine to answer questions and doing simple data entry.
- Intake workers offer a word of welcome and help clients fill out our intake form. Some ability to speak Spanish or Arabic is helpful here but not necessary.
- Marketing & PR volunteers help us spread the word to the Detroit community about the work that SWIRC does. Exceptional written communication ability is a plus!
- Website assistants help to ensure that the SWIRC website is always up-to-date with current SWIRC content.
- Event coordinator volunteers are critical for SWIRC fundraising and educational events. Keep an eye on our News & Stories section for upcoming events!
Scheduling
Volunteers can work in 2-3 hour shifts during any scheduled clinic hours. We ask that you consider a six-month commitment as you signing up for a shift.
Some volunteers commit to a regular shift, and some are on-call for when openings in the schedule appear.
Orientation
All volunteers must participate in an orientation at our Southwest Legal Clinic and fill out an application before signing up for a regular shift.
