Southwest Legal Clinic Open to the Public Again

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, our “normal” meant a crowded waiting area and many people coming and going to the clinic. Everyone walked in, and everyone got help. While we have been seeing clients by appointment only for more than a year now, it has not felt quite the same with the doors only accessible through a security guard.

As of last week, the doors to the Mercado are now open again! We are excited to be once again able to welcome clients in to wait to see us and get help for all their legal needs.

However, this is still a cautious reopening. Everyone coming into the building must wear a mask covering their mouth and nose and complete a health screening. We are also still asking all clients to make an appointment to guarantee that they can be seen. We will make every effort to help everyone who comes to visit us at the clinic, but not having an appointment may mean extended wait times.

Now that the building is open again, we need more volunteers! If you are a lawyer, advanced law student, or paralegal, we can use your help as a legal consultant. If you speak Spanish, Arabic, or Afghan languages, we can use your help as a translator. If you are just eager to help immigrants and can use the internet, you can help as a researcher! Complete a volunteer inquiry to get the process started.

The Southwest Detroit Immigrant and Refugee Center provides free and low-cost legal services to those who need them most in the Detroit area, with a focus on recent immigrants and refugees.

We were founded in 2014 by Kevin Piecuch, our Executive Director, and principal attorney, to help meet the great need for quality legal services in underserved communities. We believe that everyone deserves justice regardless of their country of origin, the color of their skin, or their ability to afford an attorney.
