MCIRR Calling on ICE to stop enforcement in light of COVID-19

by Adam Delezenne

Last week the Michigan Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, of which SWIRC is a member, called upon ICE to stop enforcement efforts and release all non-violent and medically vulnerable detainees. Immigration detention centers are often crowded, with individuals spending much of the day in close contact with others.

Many immigrants in ICE custody have no history of violence and do not pose any danger to the community, these individuals are safer at home, lessening the overall population of detention centers.

Recently ICE announced that they are slowing down enforcement, focusing only on those who have committed a crime or are a threat to public safety.
