One of the hardest things for us at SWIRC these past two weeks has been not being able to see our clients. Every week, three times a week, we set up our clinic in Southwest Detroit, Detroit’s Eastside, and in Pontiac to help anyone who brings us legal needs. Before COVID-19 became a local concern, we were seeing almost 60 client families per week.
It was a hard decision to suspend our clinics, but it was clearly the right one. We strongly feel that at this moment, the best way we can help our clients and our community is, first and foremost, doing our part to stop the spread of this disease. This, even though many of the concerns our clients face will not disappear during this time.
In order to continue our work, we’ve started meeting with clients via video conference! If you need legal help, you don’t need to wait until social restrictions are lifted. We can use any popular video chat that allows for group calls. If you have a smartphone, then already have everything you need to meet with us.
You can get legal help from home!
The Southwest Detroit Immigrant and Refugee Center provides free and low-cost legal services to those who need them most in the Detroit area, with a focus on recent immigrants and refugees.
