SWIRC Seeking Skadden and Equal Justice Works Fellows

The Southwest Detroit Immigrant and Refugee Center is seeking applicants to sponsor for 2021-2023 Skadden and Equal Justice Works Fellowships. We will sponsor candidates interested in projects that serve under-resourced communities in Detroit, Michigan. We prefer a focus on low-income immigrant and refugee families, in one or more of these areas of practice: immigration, domestic violence, family law, housing law, public benefits, and other areas of poverty law.

SWIRC’s mission is to ensure that the diverse communities of the Detroit-area have access to justice, regardless of their income or immigration status. SWIRC provides free and low-cost legal services to those who need them most, with a focus on recent immigrants and asylum seekers. Through our free walk-in clinics and legal representation, we provide low-barrier, culturally-competent legal services that help clients achieve stability and security in their new home in the United States. Because SWIRC does not accept funding that restricts who we can serve, we are open to all clients, regardless of residency status or the nature of their legal issue.

Qualifications

  • To be eligible, you must be a current law student who will graduate in December 2020 or May 2021, a graduate in May 2020 who will be clerking 2020-2021, or a recent law school graduate who is currently clerking and will finish the clerkships(s) by August 2021.
  • You must be eligible to apply for the Skadden Fellowship and Equal Justice Works Fellowship. Please review the requirements and the process for applying for these fellowships before you submit an application to SWIRC.
